BUCS Hill Climb

BUCS 2011 Hillclimb Championship

held on Saturday 29 October 2011 at Curbar Gap, Nr Baslow, Derbyshire

There was a great atmosphere at the race with universities ranging from Glasgow and Edinburgh right through to Portsmouth with lots of comedy characters out to support their teams with air horns and fancy dress.

Here is a great video that Duncan has made of the race to help you get a feel for the day;

Sheffield University BUCS Hill Climb from Duncan Philpott on Vimeo.

Team Sheffield was amazingly well organised by Road Captain Jerome Jacob. We had a gazebo containing 8 turbos to enable us all to have at least 40 minutes of time (if we wanted that much) to warm up, and the DH/XC boys were there to cheer us up the climb.

Although I had hoped for a time closer to 8 minutes I am very pleased with my result. After spending most of the last year off due to knee problems and only starting any sort of ‘proper’ riding/training 9 weeks ago I am very happy with my progress. My knees seem OK (touch wood) and with the training programme that Tom gave me I was able to work specifically towards increasing my anaerobic threshold, enabling me to place well.

Sarah Byrne – women’s winner

Overall it was a great day where the whole team got to hang out in our PRO gazebo, eat Soreen and banter. Nearly all the girls’ team was present so those of us who hadn’t met each yet got to do so and everyone got into the team spirit.

Epic entrant with swimming cap on!
We also beat our arch enemy, Sheffield Hallam, in the Men’s Team standings (there were no Hallam women), and we fielded the fastest man, Clem Berril, who came 6th overall (well done!) and was 18 secs faster than Hallam’s fastest. We’re going to win varsity!

The women’s race was dominated by the two Horizon riders Sarah and Annie but was still a close competition.
